Sketching in Toulouse, France

This month, I traveled to Europe for a very good reason: to meet my niece! She was born at the end of August in Toulouse, and I couldn't wait to hold her in my hands. I brought a huge suitcase filled with baby clothes from my kids and, of course, my art supplies.

Here are the sketches I made in the city. I practiced capturing the light at Capitole Square and painting bridges!

My brother also came to meet the new baby in the family. He is very creative; he does ceramics, crochet, and paints, from oil paintings to little Warhammer figures. He had never painted with watercolors before, so I taught him some techniques. While showing him wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, using the paper as white, and all that jazz, I realized two things. First, how frustrating watercolors can be at the beginning when you don't have control over the water. Second, it has been almost three years since I returned to painting, and I've learned so much by being consistent with my practice. I can now very quickly sketch a place with watercolors, sometimes in less than half an hour. So practice, practice, practice!

To finish this post, here is the dessert! I lived in France for a year, and it still surprises me how many boulangeries there are in every part of the city. We visited this place twice... the desserts were amazing.

Chocolate dessert! I painted it with watercolor at home but we came back to this place two days later so I took the photo with the inspiration
